Somatic awareness is one of the keystones of the Kids Cooperate social skills group curriculum. We believe that being able to read and understand the signs that the sympathetic (unconscious) nervous system leaves are essential skills that allow us to use a calming technique or positive self talk.
A recent study from Finland validates the importance of this approach. Scientists found that people across different cultures consistently identified emotions with specific regions of the body. You can read more of the study on NPR here: http://goo.gl/54sC2w.
What this suggests is that practicing skills that bring a greater awareness of the body's connection and response to emotion is key to applying effective interventions.
