Tonight in groups one of our friends shared a story about a frightening incident they witnessed (a mugging) right before group. Everyone had a lot of questions and stories of their own. This gave us an opportunity to talk about making meaningful connections in a way that matches the tone as well as the content of the conversation. This means that if someone shares a scary experience about witnessing a mugging, we don't share a humorous story about something similar, but could share another unrelated experience that connects to their experience or emotion. As a way of connecting our unit on the brain to our unit on forming opinions, we discussed the factors that cause people to experience things differently. Past experiences, memories, differences in bodies, perceptions, and expectations/attitudes.
